The Global Financial Crisis The Global Financial Crisis is the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression. It is also the largest domestic-level financial crisis since the Great Depression. The current global financial crisis is the result of many unforeseen and structural problems. The crisis struck at the crossroads of the twenty-first century when the financial system of the world's largest economy was being formed and the rules of sound financial management were beginning to be established. The crisis affected not just financial institutions such as banks, but also business leaders, citizens, and public policies. The crisis affected not only the consumers and businesses but also the governments and central banks of the industrialized world. The current global financial crisis is the consequence of many unforeseen and structural problems. The crisis struck at the crossroads of the twenty-first century when the rules of sound financial management were beginning to be established. This course explains the most important aspects of the current global financial crisis. We begin with an overview of the current global economic situation and the origins of the current global financial crisis. Then we focus on the current global financial crisis in detail. We cover the most important topics such as the creation of pan-national institutions, the regulation of financial institutions, the application of sound fiscal and monetary policies and the application of economic and financial policies to mitigate the effects of the financial crisis. We conclude by looking at the role of individuals, financial institutions, governments and economic planners in the creation of a sound financial financial management system.
