Innovation for Entrepreneurs: From Idea to Marketplace Innovation is often described as a basic requirement for new business models. Why innovation is necessary? What does it mean to create value for consumers in a sustainable fashion? What is the role of innovation in emerging markets? This course will provide an in-depth overview of the definition and framework of innovation, the role of innovation in the competitive marketplace, the organization, strategy and operations of an innovation organization, the role of innovation in emerging markets, and innovative approaches to financing and business models. Throughout the course, you will be challenged to think outside of the box and to question everything you’ve been told so far. You’ll also have the opportunity to put your thoughts into action. The first part of this course builds on the discussions of innovation in the first week of classes in the #1 ranked engineering program in the world, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Innovation management measurement The Innovation Value Chain is a measurement framework developed by Hansen and Bikinshaw and presents innovation as a three-phase process that involves idea generation, idea conversion and idea diffusion. The idea generation can take place in-house or can also come from external influences. In the conversion phase the innovation is selected and built and in the diffusion phase it is spread and commercialized. With rapid advancements in transportation and communications over the past few decades, the old world concepts of factor endowments and comparative advantage which focused on an area’s unique inputs are outmoded for today’s global economy. Economist Joseph Schumpeter, who contributed greatly to the study of innovation economics, argued that industries must incessantly revolutionize the economic structure from within, that is innovate with better or more effective processes and products, as well as market distribution, such as the connection from the craft shop to factory. He famously asserted that "creative destruction is the essential fact about capitalism".
