About Course

This course provides those involved in educating members of the health professions an asynchronous, interdisciplinary, and interactive way to obtain, expand, and improve their teaching skills. These skills can then be applied within their own professional context, with a variety of learners, extending across many stages. After completing this course, learners will: 1. Understand educational theory as it relates to health professions education 2. Match instructional methods with desired educational outcomes 3. Learn a variety of applied teaching techniques 4. Share successful teaching strategies Suggested resources will include educational videos, individual readings, recommended reference books, and crowd-sourced recommendations. All students should have dependable access to the internet with video streaming capabilities. Some students may want the ability to utilize on-line video conferencing as well.

Course Introduction

Instructional Methods in Health Professions Education This course is designed for health education specialists, teachers, administrators, and other educators who want to increase their student-to-teacher ratio in health-related professions. This course builds upon the health professions education and pedagogy strategies discussed in Course 1 of this Specialization. The course focus is primarily on instructional design for health education professionals, but the course also applies to anyone who wants to take a more in-depth interest in the health sciences. This involves an increased understanding of the key instructional techniques, concepts, and/or pedagogy utilized by health educators in their professional practice. The course is also an opportunity for those who have a passion for health education to put into practice the knowledge and skills necessary to become a more effective and more successful educator in the health-related field. The course requires the active involvement of the student in the instructional process. This involvement includes the creation of sample activities, reflection, and monitoring of student learning, as well as engagement with the instructor and peer learners in the instructional process. The course focus is primarily on activities and strategies aimed at increasing the overall level of involvement in the instructional process for health education professionals. The course involves a significant amount of hands-on, experiential learning. Activities and strategies will be demonstrated in a practical and effective manner, which will enable the student to implement the concepts learned in this course into their own practice. NCHEC develops and administers the CHES exam in the United States, a competency-based test for health education specialists.
