About Course

Do you want to learn how to plan affordable and context-specific sanitation solutions? Be up-to-date on the newest developments in urban sanitation planning and programming? Get to know best practice examples of urban sanitation systems in low- and middle-income countries? If yes, this course is for you! This course provides you with an introduction to integrated sanitation planning, both on a citywide scale and for specific contexts such as informal settlements. You will become familiar with different sanitation planning frameworks as well as different systems and technologies relevant along the sanitation value chain. You will learn why systems’ thinking is crucial for urban environmental sanitation, and how to apply key terminology and important concepts. INSTRUCTION Eawag-Sandec and EPFL jointly offer this course with support from sanitation experts of the World Bank and WHO. LANGUAGES We simultaneously offer this course in English and French. The name of the French course is « Planification & Design des Systèmes et Technologies d’Assainissement ». MOOC SERIES This course is one of four in the series “Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development".

Course Syllabus

To get started, you will get an overview of why sanitation is important for human health and environmental protection, especially in urban areas. Then, you will learn about what an Enabling Environment is and why it is important. Towards the end of the first week, you will get a taste of some state-of-the-art environmental sanitation planning approaches (Sanitation 21, CLUES, CLTS) that are currently being used in international development work.

Course Introduction

Planning & Design of Sanitation Systems and Technologies Sanitation systems are under pressure in many countries around the world. This course will introduce you to the science of sanitation and how it’s important to your overall health and wellbeing. We’ll cover topics such as the science of sanitation and how it’s important to your overall health and livelihood. We’ll also focus on the design of sanitation systems and the technologies used for sanitation. We’ll cover topics such as the science of sanitation, the role of sanitation in sustainable development, the need for integrated and local sanitation implementation, concerns about the health impacts of sludge pollution and on-site desalination. This is part 1 of the specialization. The course will continue in the future courses of the specialization. We invite you to join the conversation by taking a look at the associated “Responding to Sanitation Crisis” document. By the end of this course, you should be able to: - state the facts and context of sanitation issues globally, in particular in urban areas - critically analyse sanitation technologies and how they are being used - design a system that effectively delivers water, sanitation, and hygiene services - critically analyse the role of cultural practices in sustainable development - critically analyse the role of local communities in sanitation - critically analyse the role of local governments and multi-sectoral organisations in sanitation - critically analyse the role of individuals, communities and multi-sectoral organisations in sanitation -

Failures of water supply and sanitation systems Failures of water supply and sanitation systems describes situations where water supply and sanitation systems (also called WASH systems) have been put in place (for example by the government or by non-government organizations (NGOs) but have failed to meet the expected outcomes. Often this is due to poor planning, insufficient stakeholder involvement at the various stages of the project and lack of maintenance.
Network planning and design There are a wide variety of tools available for network planning and design depending on the technologies being used. These include
Environmental design and planning Environmental design and planning is the moniker used by several Ph.D. programs that take a multidisciplinary approach to the built environment. Typically environmental design and planning programs address architectural history or design (interior or exterior), city or regional planning, landscape architecture history or design, environmental planning, construction science, cultural geography, or historic preservation. Social science methods are frequently employed; aspects of sociology or psychology can be part of a research program.
Water supply and sanitation in Costa Rica In addition to its role of service provider, AyA is responsible for providing support to water and sanitation associations in rural communities outside of AyA's service area and monitoring their compliance with technical norms. AyA can assume the operation of failing systems in order to guarantee the continuity of provision of services. The Rural Works Department within AyA is responsible for the planning, design, financing and construction of rural water supply and sanitation systems and the provision of technical assistance to the ASADAS.
Failures of water supply and sanitation systems National government mapping and monitoring efforts as well as post-project monitoring by NGOs or researchers, have identified the failure of water supply systems (also known as water points, wells, boreholes, or similar) and sanitation systems (one part of sanitation systems are the toilets). The following sections provide examples of those failures sorted by country.

Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Systems The Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Systems was founded in 2002 and is published by World Scientific. It contains articles relating to advanced manufacturing, in terms of "research and development, product development, process planning, resource planning, applications, and tools". This includes topics such as collaborative design, resource simulation, virtual reality technologies and applications, and supply chain management.
Systems design If the broader topic of product development "blends the perspective of marketing, design, and manufacturing into a single approach to product development," then design is the act of taking the marketing information and creating the design of the product to be manufactured. Systems design is therefore the process of defining and developing systems to satisfy specified requirements of the user.
Systems design System design is the process of defining the architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. Systems design could be seen as the application of systems theory to product development. There is some overlap with the disciplines of systems analysis, systems architecture and systems engineering.

Systems-oriented design Systems-oriented design (S.O.D.) uses system thinking in order to capture the complexity of systems addressed in design practice. The main mission of S.O.D. is to build the designers' own interpretation and implementation of systems thinking. S.O.D. aims at enabling systems thinking to fully benefit from design thinking and practice, and design thinking and practice to fully benefit from systems thinking. S.O.D. addresses design for human activity systems, and can be applied to any kind of design problem ranging from product design and interaction design, through architecture to decision making processes and policy design.
